Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has said his players need to change their minds quickly if they want to win trophies this season.
The Dutchman was frustrated when his side conceded a goal in the final minute of normal time to lose 3-2 to Arsenal at the Emirates stadium on Sunday evening.
“Maybe in the next few hours we understand that we are in a good position, we understand that we are in a good development, a good process, but I am worried at the moment,” said Ten Hag.
“I told the players if you want to win trophies, titles, we have to change our minds because you can’t be in a top game, you are making three big mistakes when you concede your goals. especially the last goal, you yourself have to feel the game at that point.”
“The maximum point was a point and then you have to take the point and you can’t give away a goal like we did at the top level. You can’t win trophies there.”
“I think it changes with coaching, I think we can change that, we have already seen how the mentality of the players has changed in the last few months but we also have to notice today that we have a way to go to be on top. level.”
United took the lead through Marcus Rashford in the first half, but then fell behind to goals either side of Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Saka at half-time. Lisandro Martinez looked to have deserved a point for United before Nketiah struck again in the 89th minute to give Ten Hag their first Premier League win for more than two months.
”You have to defend better,” said Ten Hag. when you start the game and you get up. It was too easy to give away the 1-1 goal.”
“When you’re in the game and at 1-0 you have to understand that more spaces will come. We have to learn these lessons if we want to come here and beat these big teams.”
Ten Hag was frustrated as United had already conceded a goal in extra time to draw 1-1 at Crystal Palace four days earlier. ”I think the two games are head-to-head [against Arsenal and Crystal Palace], they were really close. Losing in the final stages of the game is hard to accept and that can’t happen.”
“We have to face that, we have to learn lessons, and make mistakes because I think the three goals were avoidable. Usually we are better in those situations.”
After United’s 2-1 win over Manchester City last weekend it looked like they were on the verge of launching a Premier League title bid, but after taking just one point from their next two games it looks like this challenge is already over. .
”We didn’t talk about it [the title] … That’s from the people around us and the fans and we just want to win every game,” Ten Hag said. “We showed that today, being brave, but then you see we created a chance. Like I said, if you want to win trophies, you can’t make those mistakes like we did tonight.”
