Surfshark Joins First Independent Site Audit

Another virtual private network provider has taken an important step towards boosting its transparency with customers. Shark shark – CNET Editors’ Choice for Best Value VPN and one of ours Best VPN options – an independent audit was carried out without logs by the audit firm Deloitte, the VPN company said in a blog post on Wednesday.

“The positive result from Deloitte’s no-logs assurance report provides our users and future customers with factual evidence that Surfshark operates at the highest privacy and quality standards,” wrote Surfshark VPN product owner Justas Pukys. “We will continue to conduct various audits and tests to obtain independent verification of our security and privacy measures.”

The audit examined the configuration and management of Surfshark’s IT systems and IT support operations and was conducted between November 21 and December 2, 2022, according to a summary of Deloitte’s audit report (PDF). As part of the audit, Deloitte audited the design and configuration of Surfshark’s standard VPN servers, static IP VPN servers, multi-hop servers and multi-port servers.

“Based on the procedures carried out and the evidence obtained, it is our opinion that the configuration of the IT systems and the management of the IT support operations have been properly prepared, in all relevant respects in accordance with [Surfshark’s no-logs policy],” said Deloitte.

Deloitte’s validation is important, as an independent audit is one of the only ways to confirm this claims no VPN provider logs which is legitimate. Although an independent audit from a firm like Deloitte can only confirm its findings regarding the scope and duration of its audit, it can give customers some confidence that the VPN they are using is true to what it promises.

“[The] A No Logs Policy is one of the most important features of our Services,” says Surfshark in its Terms of Service. “It means that your activities are not logged, retained or transferred to third parties in any way when you connect to our Services. We do not collect any information about what you do online (your visited IP addresses, browsing history, session information, bandwidth used, connection time stamps, network traffic or any other similar data).

Surfshark’s announcement comes two weeks after a sister company NordVPN Announced independent audit without own logs, also completed by Deloitte. Surfshark’s browser extensions were independently audited in 2018 and its server infrastructure in 2021, but Deloitte’s audit is Surfshark’s first independent audit without logs.
