from calabria to paris: the beginning of ‘magna graecia’ at maison&objet

Designer Calabria Antonio Aricò takes that Maison & ObjetJanuary 2023 fair to reveal Magna Graecia, a collection of terracotta things designed for Seletti. Taking stylistic cues from the ancient Greek colonies of southern Italy, the collection includes familiar motifs from Doric and Ionic columns, wave patterning, and moonstones. sculpted with reference to antiquity. As such, the works translate the traditional craftsmanship of southern Italy through a playful and contemporary lens, a common theme among the designer’s work.

The team describes the spirit of the collection: ‘Magna Graecia tells an ancient story that, through Seletti, finds its own way to enter contemporary everyday life with irony and grace..’

antonio aricò + seletti bringing the Mediterranean to the world

Antonio Aricò crafts the Magna Graecia collection for Seletti — now visible at Maison & Objet — as a family of outdoor and indoor objects. The designer hopes that the objects will invade terraces, gardens, verandas but also lounges, living rooms and entrance halls. The ubiquitous terracotta material is closely linked to the Mediterranean tradition and common throughout southern Italy. With this in mind, Aricò introduces the project to bring those warm, sunny atmospheres to interiors around the world.

Terracotta seems like a very weak material, but it can do magic,’ says Antonio Aricò.I am fascinated by its ‘nude’ color and the natural imperfection of its thickness, characteristics that inspired me to create a family of objects that could speak about craftsmanship and at the same time tell passionate stories by depicting the decorations of Magna Graecia..’

translating Greek tradition through modern design

The objects within Antonio Aricò’s Magna Graecia collection range from functional to decorative objects. Among the functional pieces are vases with Doric, Greek, or wave ornamentation that are crafted in standing and wall-mounted editions. A jug is designed to evoke the common stereotype of Greek pottery, and an Ionic column serves as a footstool or ashtray.

Meanwhile, decorative objects include the bust of Man and Poppea, together with two large and sensuous ‘bronzes’ inspired by the famous Riace sculptures. Vases take the shape of male and female heads inspired by Caltagirone ceramics, while an ‘amphora’ cup and jar show battle decorations and love scenes.
